NEW! Literacy 123 on the V/Vmax
July 22 at 2:00 PM EST
August 26 at 12:00 PM EST
September 16 at 2:00 PM EST
“Language is the cornerstone of literacy learning. Reading, writing, listening and speaking are so interconnected yet independent language systems that develops in parallel waves” (Sturm & Clendon, 2004). In the first Literacy 123 session, we looked at how we can involve our AAC students in the same high quality literacy experiences occurring in the regular education classroom by providing access to word study, reading and writing in specific activities. In this session, we will take a closer look at how we can use the language within our language system to develop literacy skills. We will explore the language structure and language use tools already found within the pre-programmed communication pages in the Series 5 software (the software on V & Vmax devices). We will discuss how these tools can be used within communication based literacy learning experiences to foster language, literacy and AAC connections.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to:
- List language structure and language use tools within the Series 5 communication pages
- Identify language needs & literacy implications of students who use AAC
- Utilize language use and language structure tools within a variety of literacy activities
Prerequisites: Getting Started with the V / Getting Started with the V/Vmax and/or knowledge of basic programming & communication pages / Literacy 123 / What is InterAACT? / The Gateway© Paradigm: Formula for Efficiency and Linguistic Competence with Joan Bruno

NEW! InterAACT: Flexibility in Communication
July 18 at 10:00 AM EST
August 19 at 4:00 PM EST
September 9 at 3:00 PM EST
As verbal communicators, we use our language in flexible ways. We choose different words and combinations of words. Sometimes we are quick and to the point. Sometimes we are elaborate and exacting. We can express the same message in very different ways. How can we help our AAC users experience the same flexibility?
This session will focus on the tools provided in the InterAACT framework and found on the V/Vmax, Palmtop 3, and M3 that can help increase flexibility in communication. We will also touch on research that supports the need for multiple language tools.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to:
- Name the two core components of InterAACT
- Describe how the same message can be communicated in different ways.
- Summarize key research findings related to appropriate use of language use and language structure.
Prerequisites: What is InterAACT?
Session Time: 1 hour
