Ultimately it will take an evaluation from speech a language pathologist knowledgeable in AAC to determine if a communication device is appropriate for your loved one. Below in Step 1 there are four simple questions to get you started.
Is there a communication device appropriate for my loved one?
- Does the individual have difficulty expressing their wants, needs, feelings, and thoughts in one or more environments?
- Do you or others have to focus, have background knowledge or ask multiple questions to understand what that person is saying?
- Does the individual become frustrated when attempting to communicate? Do they sometimes give up?
- Does the individiual understand more than they are able to express?
If you answered Yes to one or more of the questions above, then it would be worthwhile to have your loved one evaluated by Speech Lanugage Pathologist knowledgeable in AAC.
If the SLP determines that your loved one would benefit from a communication device they will perform an evaluation with a device to identify the one that best fits your loved ones needs and abilities.
